New Beginning

Spring is my favorite time of year. Midwest winters can be bitterly cold and snowy, so spring is anxiously awaited by many of us who call the Midwest home. This particular spring I was touched by some unexpected blessings.

My horse had passed away the previous fall leaving a hole in my heart that I wasn’t sure how to fill. I know that may sound silly or over dramatic but for many of us pets are family and this is exactly what my little guy was to me…anyway, I decided to hang a flower planter from the porch overhang. I thought the pretty little purple flowers would certainly brighten up the place, but to my overwhelming delight a lovely little pair of robins decided to call my planter home! Best of all the nest was very close to the front door as well as at eye level. I had the pleasure and privilege of not only observing there meticulous parenting skills but also was able to take amazing pictures and videos (from a distance of course)of the entire process! When the time came to decide what I would attempt to paint, the little spring family was the first thing to come to mind. I pulled out an old canvas I had tucked away and began my first painting.

You know what the best part of this whole experience was? My little robin couple didn’t just lay one clutch of eggs in the planter that spring but “3” separate clutches! I was given the opportunity to watch the magical event of nest building, hatching, feeding and then the eventual launch into the great big world around them. It was an amazing spring, one I will never forget and always cherish.

The original "New Beginnings" (shown at the top of the page) is no longer available except in print. I can also do a commission for you if you want a bird painting or drawing that reflects the birds that live in your area. Please contact me at Shannondumais@gmail.com for questions or inquiries on these paintings.
